A word from our Education Director

As the Director of Lennox Island Education, I am responsible for overseeing the operations of John J. Sark Memorial School, it's students, and it's faculty. Since the school is a Federal school there is no formal affiliation between the school and the Prince Edward Island Provincial Department of Education. When students graduate from John J. Sark Memorial School, they are bused from Lennox Island to Provincially run schools: Hernewood Intermediate School which offers grades seven through nine and Westisle Composite High School which offers grades ten through twelve. The Lennox Island Band Council pays a set tuition rate to the province for every student attending the Provincially run schools. Apart from overseeing the operations of the elementary school, I also act as a middle-man between the Lennox Island Band Council, or residents of Lennox Island and the Provincially run schools.

The Band Council also offers assistance to members of the Lennox Island Band who are attending Post-secondary schools and the administering of this assistance is also my responsibility. For further information you may contact me at (902) 831-2779 or you may e-mail me alan.gillis@lennoxisland.com

John J. Sark Memorial School

John J. Sark Memorial School is a Mi'kmaq elementary school located within the Aboriginal community of Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island Canada. Our School was opened in 1981. Formal education on Lennox Island dates back to 1868 when a schoolroom was opened in the home of the teacher at this time, Martin Francis, a member of the Lennox Island Band. The present day school is named after a long time teacher on Lennox Island: John Jacob Sark. The building of the school in 1981, was the culmination of hard work and perseverance of community members including the Chief at the time, Chief Jack Sark and the present day Chief, Chief Charlie Sark who was the Director of Education for Lennox Island at the time.

Within John J. Sark Memorial School there are three classrooms: a kindergarten for four and five year olds, a combined grades one, two, and three classroom, and a combined grades four, five, and six classroom. Forty-four students attend John J. Sark Memorial School and ten people are employed within the school. The curriculum within the school includes Mi'kmaq language and culture.
