Lennox Island Streetscape Plan: Phase 1 and
2
During the spring and summer of 2005, Phase 1 of the Lennox
Island Streetscape Plan will be built. The Streetscape will include
building a sidewalk from the entrance to "The Path of Our
Forefathers" to the Ecotourism Complex (including parking and
curbing around St. Anne's Church) and down to the entrance to Indian
Feather Path.
The Streetscape Project will include sidewalks, decorative
streetlights, benches, parking lots, curbing and tree-plantings.
Additionally, the decorative streetlights will extend to Jake's
Kwik Way along the planned route for Phase 2 of the Streetscape
plan. Phase 2 will be undertaken in 2005.
Future phases of the Streetscape program will expand the
improvement area throughout the community.
Plans can be viewed at the Development and Growth Office in the
Band Office.
Trail Expansion/Improvements
Further development of "The Path of Our Forefathers" is planned
for the summer of 2005. This will include 1.2 km of new trail at the
northside of Lennox Island (where the trail currently only follows
the beach). The new trail will include more boardwalks and
interpretation. If the budget permits, we plan on resurfacing the
long loop of the trail as well.
Hostel Completion
Plans are in place to complete the Hostel floor of the Ecotourism
Complex. This will be a welcome addition to the Ecotourism product.
The Hostel will sleep about 14 people for extremely reasonable rates
- which should provide a needed boost to all Lennox Island-based
business.
Canada Games2009 / Band Office
Lennox Island First Nation will be hosting Wrestling during the
2009 Canada Summer Games. An assessment of the needs of the Games
and the cost of bringing our existing facility up to the Canada
Games standard has caused us to pursue the construction of a new
Band Office and Canada Games facility.
The Canada Games facility must be completed for a national
wrestling event during the summer of 2008, which will require that
construction begin in early 2007 at the latest. Our goal is to have
a details related to design, construction costs and financing
completed during 2005, so that an orderly tendering process can be
undertaken in early 2006.
Provided all funding targets are met, you can look forward to
fully accessible Band Offices, fitness facilities, a judo room,
business opportunities, new Day Care, Head Start, Kindergarten and
Family Services areas, as well as dedicated space for elders and
youth and adult education program. Improved facilities for major
events such as St. Anne's Sunday, Winter Pow Wows and Conferences
will make the facility an excellent legacy of the 2009 Canada
Games.
The facility will be constructed to a C-2000 standard behind the
current Band Office and will necessitate the construction of a new
Public Works compound during 2006. After the 2009 Canada Games
facility is completed, the current Band Office will be dismantled
and - if possible - re-assembled as a storage facility at another
location on Lennox Island.
This new, energy efficient facility should be both a savings for
LIFN on-going operations and as well as a long-term revenue
generator for the Band.
Energy Projects
A number of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects are
currently underway.
Wind Testing has been taking place on Lennox Island since June
28, 2004. We are currently reviewing our options for proceeding with
a Wind-related development.
The Community Energy Baseline has been completed and the results
will be presented in the May edition of "Kwimu."
A model renewable energy centre is being proposed in concert with
the "Innovation and Technology Partnership." The model centre would
demonstrate and apply on number of renewable energy technologies for
public demonstration and monitoring.
Plans will be available for viewing in May
2005.
