Quillwork Business Apprentice (3 positions)

Project:

Individuals will become apprentice quill workers, learning all the components to creating traditional Mi’kmaq porcupine quillwork along with the business skills necessary to promote, demonstrate and sell quality artwork.

Apprentices will learn traditional harvesting techniques for porcupine quills, birch bark, sweet grass and spruce root. Apprentices will learn how to provide demonstrations and workshops to the general public.

Job Description:

  • This is a term position offering up to 37.5 hours per week, ending August 26, 2016.
  • Location: Fisherman’s Pride Boardroom.
  • This is a targeted position for Lennox Island First Nation community members who are EI eligible and are interested in creating and selling Mi’kmaq quill & bark artwork.
  • Valid drivers license and vehicle considered an asset.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work as a team member.
  • Must be friendly, personable and professional.
  • Must have effective communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable in the woods.
  • Ability to type and use social media.
  • Ability to be assigned tasks and to work independently to complete tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn to take direction through written and verbal explanation;
  • Correctly harvest materials needed;
  • Prepare the product and materials according to traditional methods;
  • Measure, cut, shape and assemble materials made of wood and other materials, using required tools;
  • Prepare and practice mock workshops and help prepare for actual workshops, selling events and demonstrations on and off reserve.
